As World Food Safety Day approaches, Massmart aims to further reinforce trust with its customers by embracing this year’s theme: “From burden to solutions: safe food everywhere.”
This year’s theme echoes the World Health Organization’s (WHO) call to transform food safety challenges into proactive solutions. According to the WHO, unsafe food causes 1.6 million illnesses every day worldwide, highlighting the importance of science-based controls and shared responsibility across the food value chain. Massmart’s holistic approach to food safety initiatives in its Makro, Game, Cash & Carry and Walmart stores directly aligns with the WHO’s vision of reducing food-borne illnesses.
Commenting, Silnia Badenhorst, Safe Product and Consumer Services Executive at Massmart said, “We operate a robust food safety programme across our entire value chain. From our work that ensures supplier compliance against internationally benchmarked standards, to our in-store processes and regular independent audits, we are truly committed to giving our customers peace of mind about the food products that they purchase from us.”
In addition to the above, Massmart’s strong stance against the topical issue of food fraud aims to guard against incorrect labelling, substitution, tampering, or misrepresentation which can mislead consumers and pose safety risks – particularly where allergens or undeclared ingredients are involved.
Alongside its commitment to upholding food safety standards, Massmart is also intent on educating consumers on how they too can be more aware of food safety standards when they shop.
“More information about how we drive food safety in our stores and also what customers can look out for will be available on our social media channels throughout this week,” Badenhorst added.
