JOHANNESBURG, South Africa, Nov. 22, 2025 – Walmart (NYSE: WMT) announced the grand opening of its first-ever Walmart-branded store on African soil.
The new store is a feat of speed, and a point of immense pride for the community.
Today’s opening marks just 73 days since Walmart announced it would bring the brand to Africa by the end of the 2025 calendar year. Led by an African store manager, and employing more than 80 associates, the store opens its doors just in time for the holiday shopping season.
Bringing Every Day Low Prices to the African continent
“Opening this first Walmart store in South Africa is about much more than a business milestone; it is a commitment to helping customers save money and live better by consistently delivering the lowest total cost for the basket of products they need,” said Andrea Albright, executive vice president and chief growth officer for Walmart International and operating partner, Massmart. “We’re delivering quality without requiring customers to wait for short-term promotions or worry about fluctuating prices. I’m thrilled for the Walmart spark to shine brightly across South Africa.”

More than a store: Creating jobs and opportunity
“We’re thrilled to bring Walmart’s Every Day Low Prices and convenience to families in Roodepoort,” said Onicca Mothapo, the store manager. “We are also incredibly proud that the Walmart Clearwater store has created 80 new career opportunities and will support 15 SME suppliers identified at the Walmart Supplier Growth Summit held in Johannesburg earlier this year.”
Entrepreneurs like Mandy Naidoo of Afriwear Apparel, a supplier of affordable quality clothing for toddlers, which will be available in the Clearwater store. At the heart of this store opening is the idea that retail, at its best, changes lives by creating jobs and lifting communities.
