Affordable Meals That Stretch Your School Holiday Budget

July 15, 2025

According to the Competition Commission’s latest Essential Food Pricing Monitoring report, the cost of food in South Africa has climbed by 50% between 2020 and 2024. In April this year the Pietermaritzburg Economic Justice and Dignity Group (PMBEJD) which publishes the national household affordability index in South Africa reported a R100 month-on-month increase in the average cost of a household food basket across three major South African provinces.

In light of the above school holidays now bring an added financial challenge of keeping kids well-fed while they’re at home all day. Samantha Pillay, Food Merchandise Manager at Game, encourages parents to consider Private Brand food options as a way to keep grocery costs under control. ‘Private Brands provide a value-for-money option that helps parents stretch their food budgets without sacrificing taste and quality,’ says Pillay. ‘At Game, our Private Brand products, which are benchmarked against national brands taste and quality, can save customers between 10% to 15% on their overall food basket.”

To help parents stay ahead of school holiday food costs, Pillay recommends the following Private Brand products available at Game:
