Wage related industrial action at builders warehouse

Builders Warehouse has, after ongoing discussions with SACCAWU, been notified of the union’s intention to embark on industrial action starting 20 November 2009.
Although Builders Warehouse management does not expect significant disruption at any of its stores, the chain has implemented contingency plans, which will include the use of trained non-permanent staff to provide cover for the duration of the action. Only 26% of staff (679 people) at the home improvement chain are unionised.
Wage negotiations started on 17 June 2009 but deadlocked on 27 August. The dispute was referred to CCMA for conciliation on 10 September but this was unsuccessful.
The parties failed to reach agreement over the quantum of the wage increase, with management offering R370 across the board (ATB) while SACCAWU demanded R370 ATB plus an additional R30 laundry allowance.
The average wage for unionized SACCAWU members at Builders Warehouse is R4 129.
