- Comments Off on Update regarding wage related industrial action at Makro and Game
Makro staff have returned to work today (19 August) following the settlement of the wage dispute declared by SACCAWU. The union has accepted an increase of R460 across the board or 7.5%, whichever is the greater.
Whilst Industrial action continues at Game, more than 51% of staff belonging to the bargaining unit, have accepted the company’s wage offer and are at work. In a further development, the Labour Court has dismissed the action brought against Game, by SACCAWU, regarding the replacement of the company’s clock card time and attendance system with a thumbprint verification system. The Court granted a cost order against the union. In terms of the order all staff are required to use the system to access the workplace.
Makro and Dion stores have continued to trade normally throughout the industrial action, albeit that SACCAWU attempted, on 17 August, to illegally disrupt trading at a five Game stores in Gauteng.
Meanwhile, constructive negotiations between Jumbo Cash and Carry and SACCAWU are underway, with a further meeting scheduled to take place on 27 August.
