In October 2017 Massmart launched Team Massmart, South Africa’s first women’s only elite running team.
The accomplished ultra and long distance team is comprised of 9 members, 7 of which are participating in the Comrades Marathon this year. They include Ann Ashworth (Team Captain) Ramadimetja Lizzy Babili, Vicky Cotter, Mia Morrison, Enie Manzini and Jenni Kruse.
In the months building up to the 2018 Comrades Marathon, the team has racked up impressive performances, including 17 podium finishes between January and May. The Team also produced an exceptional performance at the Two Oceans Marathon where they were placed second in the women’s team competition.
Team Massmart is motivated to create champions and in line with this Ann Ashworth has launched a mentee programme which aims to develop promising ultra-distance athletes. The programme, which will be expanded, currently consists of two athletes, Tsholofelo Zwane and Nandi Zaloumis-Mitchell. Nandi will be part of the Comrades team.
Commenting on the team’s preparation for the Comrades Marathon Ashworth says, “Our team has the fastest set of qualifying results of a South African ladies team, with 5 out of 7 athletes having qualified for Comrades with a marathon time under 3 hours. We believe that this makes our team highly competitive in the elite team prize category.”
The team will showcase their new, recently launched kit when they line up for the 90km test of body and mind on June 10. The high performance kit has received rave reviews for its chic appearance with the team likening it to ‘running in silk’.
Be sure to look out for Team Massmart, South Africa’s first women’s only elite running team, at the 2018 Comrades Marathon.
