Massmart, announces its donation of a second 3 000kg delivery of Max-a-Meal to the Johannesburg FoodBank, following a similar donation made in April 2009. This most recent donation was made to the City Deep branch, which distributes food to Pretoria, Tembisa, Alexandra, Soweto, Ivory Park and suburbs on the East and West Rand.

The donation will provide 36 000 individual meals to the Food Bank program, which is part of the feeding schemes established by international NGO Global Foodbanking Network. Max-a-Meal is a highly nutritious legume-based supplement comprised of samp, dried beans, barley, green peas, herbs and spices.

Massmart’s support of the Johannesburg FoodBank supplements the other feeding initiatives supported by the Group. Reiterating this point, Grant Pattison, Massmart CEO, says: “I am particularly pleased with our continued support of the FoodBank programme as our Group has prioritised feeding as a key CSI initiative. We recognise the difficulties afflicting many South African citizens, particularly in these challenging economic times, and are committed to continuing our support of feeding schemes.”

On Massmart’s continued contribution to the initiative, Jan van der Walt, Executive Director: FoodBank Johannesburg, says: “The continued support of Massmart through their donation of 3000kg of Max-a-Meal will not only assist the FoodBank in our quest for more donated food but it will also have a huge impact in the lives of food insecure individuals from communities living in the Greater Johannesburg Metro.”
