Massmart has responded to calls for aid in flood-stricken communities in Johannesburg. In an effort to support victims of the recent flash floods, Massmart has donated R50 000 worth of food to disaster relief organisation Gift of the Givers. The donation includes non-perishable goods such as maize meal, cooking oil, rice, samp and beans.
This donation will help Gift of the Givers provide food hampers to approximately 2500 flood victims in Makause, Marathon and Delport in Ekurhuleni, Johannesburg.
Massmart Group Sustainably Manager Alex Haw says, “We are committed to making a positive impact in the communities we serve so it only made sense that combine efforts with Gift of the Givers and provide assistance to people at the times they need it most.”
According to the South African Weather Service, the flash floods, which saw 90-milimetres of rain in just three hours, occurs once in 200 years.
