Massmart is pleased to announce that Distell Group was today awarded top honours at the Massmart Supplier Environmental Awards.
Now in its third year, the awards honour Massmart’s local suppliers for their commitment and exceptional performance in the implementation of environmentally-sustainable business practices.
“As retailers we have a unique opportunity to provide our customers with an array of products that enable them to meaningfully lessen their environmental impact and save them money”, said Massmart Group Sustainability Manager Alex Haw.
“Our aim is for our customers to walk into our stores and trust that we have carefully considered the products on our shelves, ensuring these goods are produced sustainably from responsibly-sourced inputs. But we cannot do this alone, we need to work closely with our suppliers to ensure that the products we sell are designed and manufactured in an environmentally-thoughtful manner.”
At a ceremony Massmart’s top performing suppliers were recognised for their commitment to sustainable supply chain management, followed by the selection of an overall winner for 2016.
Distell Group sustainability initiatives that impressed the judges include; installing a new wastewater treatment plant in Stellenbosch which will fill a dual function of generating renewable biogas for use in their operations while simultaneously pre-treating roughly 200 million litres of water per annum; improving their glass bottle return and reuse programme, which in 2016 facilitated the recovery of 149.8 million bottles. Distell has also commenced construction of a 2MW solar PV plant, which upon completion in December will be among the largest private installations in South Africa. The plant is expected to reduce Distell’s carbon footprint by 2 068 tCO2e per year through the production of 2 048 MWh of clean, renewable energy.
Alex Haw said “The suppliers recognised here today have been outstanding in their efforts to incorporate sustainable practices in the way that they run their operations and design their products. Although the size and nature of their businesses differ significantly, they have been able to derive benefit through considered, holistic sustainability interventions that have materially lessened their collective footprints.”
The finalists of the 2016 Massmart Supplier Environmental Awards were selected based on an environmental self-assessment survey, stakeholder input from leading environmental NGOs and site visits to verify their survey feedback. The finalists include:
- Backsberg Estate Cellars
- Belgotex Floors
- Kimberly- Clark SA
- Merpak Envelopes
- Nestlé (South Africa)
- Sappi Southern Africa
- Tuffy Brands
Since 2009 Massmart has worked closely with suppliers to understand and track the progress they are making with regards to producing products in a sustainable manner. This has been done through surveying the environmental practices of key suppliers on a self-assessment basis. The surveys cover among other things: packaging rationalisation, water conservation, operational energy efficiency, environmental product attributes, third party certification and biodiversity impact mitigation. The company has also developed additional surveys that address sustainable seafood and timber sourcing.
