The Massmart Board is comprised of experienced leaders with an in-depth understanding of a Board’s role and responsibilities with regard to good corporate governance; the development of business strategy; leading ethically and effectively; ensuring Massmart is a responsible corporate citizen.

The Massmart Executive Committee is a diverse and experienced management team, chaired by our Chief Executive Officer and comprises our Chief Financial Officer and ten other members of senior management.

Jonathan Molapo
Chief Executive Officer

Jonathan Molapo is Group Chief Executive Officer of Massmart (100% Walmart owned). He and his team work to help customers in 9 African countries save money and live better. Before becoming CEO, Jonathan served as the company’s chief operating officer.

Jonathan was previously CEO of Astron Energy (formerly Caltex SA). He has also held leadership positions with Puma Energy and Total. In these key leadership roles across the energy industry, Jonathan developed strong understanding of retail, particularly through his leadership of retail forecourt development in the petrol service station environment. He has led organizations both in South Africa and internationally and is passionate about developing and inspiring teams.

He holds a degree in economics from Laurentian University in Canada.

Jonathan joined Massmart in August 2023. Since joining Walmart in 2012, he has held various finance roles including FP&A, internal audit, and controllership working in the US, Canada, India and South Africa. Prior to joining Walmart, Jonathan spent more than 12 years with KPMG, having held a variety of management consulting roles across China, Australia, and the US. Jonathan is a Certified Public Accountant and is a graduate of the University of Illinois with a Masters of Accounting as well as an MBA.

Kuseni Dlamini
Board Chairman

Kuseni Dlamini is the Chairman of JSE-listed Aspen Pharmacare Holdings Ltd, the leading pharmaceutical manufacturer in the southern hemisphere with operations in over 50 countries. He was recently appointed co-Chairman of the Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS), one of South Africa’s leading business schools and is a member of the Board of the American Chamber of Commerce in SA. Kuseni is the former CEO of Old Mutual South Africa and Emerging Markets. Prior to this, he was the Head of Anglo American South Africa and a member of the Executive Committee of Anglo American plc in London and was Director of Anglo Platinum.
He is also the former Executive Chairman of Richards Bay Coal Terminal Company (RBCT) Ltd and a former Chairman of Anglo Operations (Pty) Ltd. As part of his career in mining he held a number of senior positions at Anglo Gold Ashanti and De Beers Consolidated Mines Ltd in South Africa and the United Kingdom.
Kuseni is a graduate of the Universities of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, and Oxford where he was a Rhodes Scholar. In March 2008, he was named a ‘Young Global Leader (YGL)’ by the World Economic Forum and, during the same year and month, Miningx selected him as one of the top 100 most influential people in South African mining. In June 2008, the Mail & Guardian named him as one of the top 200 young people worth taking to lunch and in the same year and month, The Economist referred to him as “A Rare Commodity’. In 2010, the World Economic Forum appointed him a member of the Global Agenda Council on Economic Growth and Poverty Alleviation. In 2011, he was appointed co-Chairman of the annual World Economic Forum (WEF) Africa Summit which brings together Heads of States, leading politicians and business leaders to debate the state of Africa in a changing world on an annual basis.

Kuseni is active in professional bodies and charities, which include the South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA), Common Purpose and is the Deputy Chairman of the Council of the University of Pretoria and former Chairman of the Board of South African National Parks (SANParks).

JP Suarez

JP was previously a Walmart-Appointed nominee on the Board until his resignation on 26 May 2017. With his extensive international retail experience and knowledge of the Massmart business, JP will add significant value to the Massmart business and Board discussions. Prior to his retirement, he served most recently as the Executive Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer, Walmart International with responsibility for International Technology, International Supply Chain and International Leverage, and previously held various senior executive roles including as Executive Vice President, Realty for Walmart U.S.

Varsha Dayaram
Senior Vice President Group Financial Services

Varsha joined Massmart in March 2018 as Group Financial Services: Finance Executive. She has 18 years of Financial Services experience and has been instrumental in the growth of financial services in Massmart. Prior to this, Varsha held various leadership roles within the Corporate and Investment Banking team at Standard Bank, including Transactional Product Services: South African Sales Head – Strategic Segment; Leveraged Finance; and Coverage: Unit Head. She also spent four years at Alexander Forbes as Executive Head: Business Development. Varsha qualified as a CA(SA) in 2002 and completed the International Executive Development Programme via GIBS and the University of Rotterdam in 2009.

Varsha was appointed Group Financial Services Executive and joined the Massmart Executive Committee on 1 August 2019.

Louise Lackay-Walters

Louise graduated from the University of Stellenbosch in 2005 after completing a BComm (law) and LLB degree. Her professional journey started in a boutique law firm, Senekal Simmonds Inc, where she served her articles and later practiced as a lawyer under the guidance of John Senekal. In 2010 she joined Total South Africa as a junior legal advisor and subsequently held various positions including serving as the Ethics Compliance and Risk Manager for 3 years. In this role she reported to the Finance and Risk Committee and the Transformation, Social and Ethics Committee of the Total Board of Directors. Louise has extensive experience in the implementation of ethics and compliance programmes covering Anti-Corruption, Anti-Fraud, Anti-Trust, Economic Sanctions and Protection of Personal Information in South Africa and sub-Saharan countries. She was also the Chairperson of the Transformation, Diversity and Inclusion Committee at Total.

She joined Massmart In January 2019 as the Anti-Corruption Executive and joined the Massmart Executive Committee in June 2019.

Brian Leroni

Brian’s work experience includes executive positions at Masstores Proprietary Limited, an associate partner at Andersen Consulting (now Accenture) and Marketing Director at CNA. He joined Massmart as Group Projects Executive in September 2004 and was appointed Group Corporate Affairs Executive in September 2005. Brian joined the Massmart Executive Committee in July 2007. He holds a BA in Industrial Psychology and Industrial Sociology from University of Witwatersrand and a MPhil (Cum Laude) from Stellenbosch University.

Sandile Lukhele
Senior Vice President General Counsel and Company Secretary

Sandile joined Massmart October 2020, as SVP, General Counsel and Group Company Secretary. In addition to this role, he serves as a member of Massmart’s Executive Committee. Sandile has more than 22 years of legal experience in corporate and commercial law, banking and finance, advisory in mergers and acquisitions, equity and debt restructuring transactions, lending and structured transactions, B-BBEE and equity equivalent transactions.

Prior to joining the company, Sandile served as a partner and Head of Legal with PwC South Africa, and he has worked with a number of law firms both global and locally focused.
Admitted as an attorney of the High Court South Africa, Sandile received his LL.B from the University of Witwatersrand, and B. Juris from University of the Western Cape.

Srividya Pandya

Srividya joined Massmart in November 2023. Since joining Walmart in 2019, she has led the acceleration of Walmart’s global omnichannel efforts and also served as Vice President of Strategic Integration for Walmart US.

Prior to joining Walmart, her career has spanned across a number of consulting and eCommerce organisations, including Amazon.

Srividya holds a B.S. in Business from Miami University and an M.B.A. from the University of Chicago’s Booth School of Business.

Andrew Stein

Andrew graduated from the University of Cape Town with a degree in Actuarial Science in 2002 and from New York University with an MBA in 2007. After spending 7 years at Mckinsey & Company servicing clients across a broad range of industries and functional areas Andrew joined Massmart as the Executive Assistant to the CEO of Cambridge Food. He has since held the positions of Marketing Director of Cambridge Food and Marketing and eCommerce Director of Makro. Andrew was appointed to the position of Vice President Game in July 2019.

Herman Venter

Full bio

Herman has over 18 years Retail experience having fulfilled roles in IT, Operations, Finance, Rebates, Marketing and Merchandise. Herman Joined Builders in 2013 within the merchandise division, taking over leadership as Vice President of Builders Merchandise in 2019. He was appointed as Vice President for Builders in August 2021.
Herman has acquired a Bachelor of Commerce Degree in Financial Management Services (2003) and then in Economic Sciences in 2004, completing his honours degree in Finance in 2006. In 2010 Herman qualified with the CIMA (Chartered Institute of Management Accountants) Professional Qualification and in 2014 he completed his MBA through Wits.

Andre Steyn

Andre originally joined Massmart in 2006 when Massmart acquired De La Rey Hardware in the Western Cape. He soon became a prominent member of the Builders Executive Team. In his time with Builders, he held several noteworthy roles such as Managing Executive for Builders Express after which he assumed responsibility for the Builders Superstore format. Following the integration of all Builders Operations functions, Andre moved into the role of Marketing and Innovation Director. He was subsequently appointed as Builders Vice President in January 2020 during which time he led the business through the challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Karen Ferrini

Karen Ferrini, who most recently served as Builders Operations Vice President, has been appointed as a new member of the Massmart Executive Committee and VP: Builders.

With almost 25 years’ experience in retail and FMCG, Karen joined Builders in 2009 as Africa Executive, soon after which she was given added responsibility for Builders’ Superstores. She was appointed Operations Vice President for all Builders stores in December 2019, a role she undertook for over 3 years ahead of being appointed in her new role.

Prior to joining Builders, Karen held various positions at Procter and Gamble spanning Engineering, Manufacturing, Warehousing & Distribution and Customer Service over a period of 11 years. She holds a BSc qualification in Chemical Engineering and a Higher Diploma in Education both of which she obtained from the University of the Witwatersrand.

Dries D’Hooghe
Senior Vice President and Chief Executive: Massmart Wholesale

Dries joined Massmart in October 2023. Since joining Walmart in 2018, he has served as VP of Central Operations, SVP of Operations and interim COO in Central Canada. He has more than 20 years of retail experience and has held executive leadership roles at several multinational companies before joining Walmart, including Nike, Deloitte and Ahold Delhaize.

Dries holds a Masters in Commercial Engineering from the University of Antwerp. He is also an alumnus of the Harvard Business School Executive Education program and the Singularity University Executive program.
