Massmart Chief Executive Officer and a member of the Risk, Social and Ethics Committees

Mitch joined Massmart on 1 September 2019 as Chief Executive Officer. He has been with Walmart since 1995 and has held several important leadership positions, including global roles in Argentina, Korea, Mexico, Japan and the International Support Center. In his leadership roles, Mitch led all merger and acquisition activity for Walmart International, assumed responsibility for Superama Supermarkets in Mexico and ran operations for the India business prior to joining the Walmart US team. Mitch joined Walmart Japan in 2015 as Chief Operating Officer with responsibility for Store Operations, eCommerce, Marketing and Format Strategy segments of the Japan business. Mitch is fluent in Spanish and received his Masters of International Finance from Thunderbird School of Global Management and his Bachelor’s Degree in Finance from Wichita State University.

Mohammed Abdool-Samad (48)

Massmart Chief Financial Officer and a member of the Risk Committee

Prior to joining Massmart, Mohammed was Group Finance Director at Illovo Sugar, Africa since 2011. Before Illovo Sugar, he spent a decade in various executive finance roles within Anglo American plc. Mohammed is a qualified CA (SA) and has a BCom from the University of KwaZulu-Natal.

Mohammed joined the Massmart Executive Committee as Chief Financial Officer on 1 August 2019.

Jane Bruyns (59)

Group Human Capital Executive, Chairperson of the HR Forum and member of the Social and Ethics Committee

Prior to joining Massmart, Jane worked for Masscash as HR Director from February 2006 until April 2015. Jane has 22 years’ experience as an HR Generalist in the Wholesale and Retail industry ranging from Recruitment, Learning & Development, Union Negotiations, Performance & Development Management, Corporate Social Responsibility and Ethics. Jane’s specialities include Coaching and Leadership Development and Organisational Ethics.
Whilst at Henley Jane was awarded the prize for outstanding academic achievement for leadership effectiveness and the prize for outstanding academic achievement for managing people.

Jane joined the Massmart Executive Committee in May 2015.

Louise Lackay-Walters (36)

Group Chief Ethics & Compliance Officer

Louise graduated from the University of Stellenbosch in 2005 after completing a BComm (law) and LLB degree. Her professional journey started in a boutique law firm, Senekal Simmonds Inc, where she served her articles and later practiced as a lawyer under the guidance of John Senekal. In 2010 she joined Total South Africa as a junior legal advisor and subsequently held various positions including serving as the Ethics Compliance and Risk Manager for 3 years. In this role she reported to the Finance and Risk Committee and the Transformation, Social and Ethics Committee of the Total Board of Directors. Louise has extensive experience in the implementation of ethics and compliance programmes covering Anti-Corruption, Anti-Fraud, Anti-Trust, Economic Sanctions and Protection of Personal Information in South Africa and sub-Saharan countries. She was also the Chairperson of the Transformation, Diversity and Inclusion Committee at Total.

She joined Massmart In January 2019 as the Anti-Corruption Executive and joined the Massmart Executive Committee in June 2019.

Richard Inskip (57)

Group Supply Chain and Logistics Executive

After graduating Richard worked for a number of companies during the 1980’s, including Edgars and SPL. Richard joined Woolworths in 1991. He was appointed to the board in 1998 and retired as the Director Operations and Financial Services (Group COO) in 2008 having served on the Holding company and multiple subsidiary boards. Richard served as the Chairman of the Wooltru Healthcare fund for 6 years as well as a trustee of the Pension fund. During this period he was a founding member of the Executive Committee of the Consumer Goods Council of SA and served on the external boards of Netactive and Business Recovery Services and attended a Strategic Management course at Harvard. After retiring from Woolworths, Richard spent some time developing and operating a game and hospitality ranch. He then co-founded Cafeine Retail Consulting which serves most of the large South African retail companies, as well as co-founding a food manufacturing company, Food by Staple. Richard served as a retail advisor to 8 Miles plc (pan African private equity fund) and served on the AVI board until he joined Massmart in January 2017.

Doug Jones (46)

After qualifying as a Chartered Accountant in 1998 Doug moved to Toronto, Canada with Deloitte.  After spending a year with MarketLink Enterprises, an eCommerce consultancy, he joined Coca-Cola Enterprises in Toronto for a number of years before returning to South Africa to join ABI (The Soft Drink Division of SAB Limited).  Doug joined Makro as Finance Director in 2007 and became Commercial Director in 2010. Doug was appointed Divisional Managing Director in September 2012, and joined the Massmart Executive Committee at the same time. He was appointed as Divisional CEO in April 2014, and was Chairman of the Massmart Pension and Provident Funds from 2009 until 2015.

Brian Leroni (55)

Group Corporate Affairs Executive, attends the Social and Ethics Committee by invitation.

Brian’s work experience includes executive positions at Masstores Proprietary Limited, an associate partner at Andersen Consulting (now Accenture) and Marketing Director at CNA. He joined Massmart as Group Projects Executive in September 2004 and was appointed Group Corporate Affairs Executive in September 2005. Brian joined the Massmart Executive Committee in July 2007.

Llewellyn Walters (56)

Divisional Chief Executive of Massbuild and Chairman of the Africa and Supply Chain Forums

Llewellyn spent thirteen years in the banking industry where he held senior positions in a number of specialist financial institutions before joining ABSA. In June 2003, Llewellyn joined Super Group, a JSE-listed supply chain and logistics company where his last position was Divisional MD responsible for the group’s African operations. He joined Massmart in November 2008 as Divisional Chief Executive for Builders Warehouse, later becoming responsible for the whole division, and was appointed to the Massmart Executive Committee upon joining.

Natasha Pramchand (47)

Interim Group General Counsel

Natasha spent the first three years of her career in private practise as an admitted advocate of the High Court of SA. Thereafter, she has held various senior in-house legal roles at multinational companies including: ELECTRONIC DATA SYSTEMS; ALCATEL TELECOMS; SASOL GAS; CADBURY/KRAFT FOODS/MONDELEZ and SAS INSTITUTE. Her multi-jurisdictional leadership roles have resulted in over 20 years’ of extensive commercial, co-sec, corporate, legal, compliance and risk management experience. Natasha joined Masswarehouse in June 2017 as the Divisional General Counsel responsible for Legal, Risk and Compliance. Natasha is also a member of Women Leading in Law (WOLELA) and Global Leaders in Law (GLL).

Varsha Dayaram (42)


Group Financial Services Executive

Varsha joined Massmart in March 2018 as Group Financial Services: Finance Executive. She has 18 years of Financial Services experience and has been instrumental in the growth of financial services in Massmart. Prior to this, Varsha held various leadership roles within the Corporate and Investment Banking team at Standard Bank, including Transactional Product Services: South African Sales Head – Strategic Segment; Leveraged Finance; and Coverage: Unit Head. She also spent four years at Alexander Forbes as Executive Head: Business Development. Varsha qualified as a CA(SA) in 2002 and completed the International Executive Development Programme via GIBS and the University of Rotterdam in 2009.

Varsha was appointed Group Financial Services Executive and joined the Massmart Executive Committee on 1 August 2019.
