Stakeholders
We recognise that it is important to engage with and promote dialogue and understanding between Massmart and anyone who is impacted by our activities. To this end, we work hard to understand stakeholder priorities and respond constructively to achieve mutual commitment to positive and beneficial action.
Shareholders - we have over 6 109 shareholders in South Africa and abroad, ranging from major institutions to individuals.
Employees – we employ over 30 495 people across our operations, and recognize our duty to implement responsible, fair and enlightened employment practices.
Communities – we operate in South Africa and 13 other sub-Saharan African countries and appreciate the need to become meaningfully involved in community upliftment initiatives in the areas within which we operate.
Customers – we transact with millions of customers the majority of whom are within the Living Standard Measure (LSM) 2 to 10 brackets and we invest every effort to responsibly satisfy their expectations of product quality and value.
Suppliers – we source goods and use the services of approximately 9 548 active suppliers and we strive to provide them with a highly competitive and socially responsible channel to sub-Saharan African markets.
Civil society – we engage pro-actively with civil society organizations such as WWF, National Youth Development Agency, WDB, the Ethics Institute of South Africa and Carbon Disclosure Project on the understanding that they play an important role in advocating responsible business practice.
Government and legislature – we engage with government departments and the legislature in areas of mutual interest with keen awareness of the positive impacts that private partnerships with government can have in all spheres of business and society.
Media – we aspire to provide journalists with ready access to Group and divisional executives recognizing the important role that the media plays in reporting issues of financial and public interest to investors, customers and broader society.
We engage pro-actively with our stakeholders, both individually and collectively, to share information and gain an appreciation for their perspectives. Engagement activities are varied and include participating in stakeholder organised forums, making formal submissions to parliament, conducting stakeholder surveys, responding to specific requests for information and hosting public policy and general interest discussion groups. Engagement is ongoing and takes place in terms of a pre-defined engagement plan.
