HIV/AIDS
At Massmart we recognise that an effective response to HIV/Aids in the workplace is an important leadership issue. As a result, and in line with Massmart’s commitment to the wellness of our people, the Group launched a comprehensive HIV/Aids management programme in November 2001.
The programme, which is managed by a Section 21 non profit organization known as Right to Care, includes ongoing Voluntary Testing and Counselling (VCT), peer counselling and support, widespread education initiatives and an HIV/Aids treatment intervention that includes the provision of free anti-retrovirals (ARV’s) to infected permanent staff and their spouses. The estimated HIV prevalence level amongst Massmart’s permanent employees is 5.6% (June 2011) as compared to a national average of 11%. It is also interesting to note that this figure has remained the same since 2010 despite a 156% increase in the number of tests carried out during the reporting period.
