Massmart, the third largest distributor of consumer goods in Africa, announces its donation of 3 000kg of Max-a-meal into the newly established Johannesburg FoodBank, which distributes food to Pretoria, Tembisa, Alexandra, Soweto, Ivory Park and at times Nelspruit. The donation is the equivalent of 36 000 individual meals. This will be the first of Massmart’s deposits into the FoodBank, which is part of the feeding schemes established by international NGO Global Foodbanking Network.

Geoff Penny, Executive Director: FoodBank South Africa, says: “FoodBank SA, an NGO, is a collaborative effort of grocery manufacturers, retailers and wholesalers, government as well as numerous faith-based and service organisations, and has been established to tackle the extreme hunger and food insecurity that exists in our country. It is estimated that 40% of South Africa’s population is food insecure.”

Max-a-Meal is a highly nutritious legume-based supplement comprised of samp, dried beans, barley, green peas, herbs and spices.

Massmart’s support of the Johannesburg FoodBank supplements the other feeding initiatives supported by the group. Reiterating this point, Grant Pattison, Massmart CEO, says: “In 2007 we prioritised feeding as a key CSI initiative and our support of the Johannesburg FoodBank is in addition to the feeding schemes we support and the establishment of container kitchens and vegetable tunnels at schools.”

On Massmart’s contribution to the initiative, Penny says: “FoodBank is most appreciative of Massmart’s donation. Max-a-Meal is an excellent product for use in feeding schemes and satisfying the nutritional needs of hungry people. We are thrilled that Massmart is focusing its CSI programme on feeding the hungry – they are truly an example of a socially responsible organisation.”
