Massmart was first to respond to urgent calls to provide emergency relief to those affected by wild fires and floods in the Western Cape. Together with disaster relief organization Gift of the Givers last week Massmart’s divisions provided aid for those in need. Thousands of people were evacuated from their homes as fires raged last week.

Makro dispatched three trucks; two 8 ton trucks with food, blankets and sanitary supplies and a 36 tonner with water. Game also dispatched three trucks with a similar product list. Builders Warehouse also contributed gas heaters, dust masks, LED lights, boots and other items to the local fire fighting department.

Massmart Group Sustainability Manager Alex Haw says it was important for the company to ramp up its efforts. “We are working with the Western Cape provincial government to help both those affected by the flooding and the fires that have ravaged part of our country. The Gift of the Givers is assisting us to distribute the products efficiently to those who need it most.”
